About The Celebration
According
to the Armenian Apostolic Church, Dyarnentaratch is celebrated on
February 14th, forty days after the birth of Christ.
Previously, this day was dedicated to Dir, the god of Literature and Wisdom.
The
most significant characteristic of the celebration is the bonfire that
is lit on February 13th. People jump over the pile of burning wood
believing that it will bring them success.
Etymology
Dyarnentaratch is also called Darndas, Derndas, Derndes, Dentaratch, Dorontch-Dorontch, Darintch-Darintch...
But among the people, the holiday is better known as Drntez.
Some
experts believe that the name of the holiday can be translated as
"burning a stack of hay in honor of the god Dir" or "stacked fire".
Tradition
On this day, every house prepared dishes consisting of grains such as khashil, pokhint, aghants.
On the eve of Dyarnentaratch, people would jump over the bonfire in order to manifest their good intentions and achieve success.
And in the evening, everyone danced around the fire and played various games together.
