Maria Jacobsen was a Danish missionary and one of the most vital eyewitnesses to the Armenian Genocide, remembered by generations of survivors as “Mayrig” or “Mama.”
Arriving in Kharpert in 1907, she cared for and protected thousands of Armenian orphans, often risking her own safety to hide them from Ottoman authorities, even adopting three orphans herself. Her detailed journal, Diaries of a Danish Missionary: Harpoot, 1907–1919, is considered a critical eyewitness account of the genocide.
After being forced to leave Turkey, she continued her mission of rescuing
children, eventually arriving in Lebanon, where she founded the Bird’s Nest
orphanage, home to over 200 children from Cilicia. Fluent in Armenian, she made
sure the children maintained their mother tongue . She
was buried, per her wishes, in the courtyard of the orphanage she founded,
among the children she called her family.
